Studios

In March 2017 we moved to our lovely school building, adjacent to Cornwall Gold. It provides us with two studio spaces – Fonteyn and Astaire – plus bathrooms, changing facilities and a large waiting space. Light and airy, they provide a wonderful environment for our students.

Beverly Matthews

Beverly Matthews—Founder: Ballet, Tap, Modern

Qualifications: Registered Teacher Status of the RAD, Teaching Certificate & Diploma, Certificates in Anatomy and History of Ballet, Associate Member of the ISTD

“My first strong dance recollection was passing RAD Grade 1 ballet; and what a thrill I felt. I had also sung from a very early age. My father, a great singer, belonged to a concert party and I frequently went with him and sang solos or stood on a stool and sang a duet with him. I feel very proud of our school. Over the years many, many children have been through our doors and have experienced the joy and fun of dancing. What’s more they keep returning to let me know what they are doing now and what dancing meant to them which is wonderful. I now have daughters of pupils attending and so the cycle begins again”.

Beverly studied dancing as a child with Miss McGowan in Penzance. She successfully auditioned for a place at London College of Dance and Drama, but without the funds to go away turned instead to teaching dance. At 17 she was asked to teach two girls a dance for a Sunday School concert. Soon other children followed and the rest is history. From these early participants the school has grown to over 200 pupils but retains the feeling of a “big family”. For over 20 years Beverly was the only Cornish teacher who had the Dance Teacher’s Diploma of the RAD as well as the Teaching Certificate. In 2002 another teacher gained this award—her daughter Melissa. Beverly has had the honour of being asked to train as an examiner for the RAD several times, but prefers to concentrate on the school. She has choreographed for numerous societies all over the county (literally hundreds of shows) and was for many years Chairman of Redruth Amateur Musical and Pantomime Society.
